Record to Rangers
The Rangers under 17 soccer team set a club record when it thrashed Burwood, 28-0, in a Canterbury Football Association competition match at Cuthberts Green recently. The lop-sided scoreline could have been higher, according to the coach, Eddie Van Soest, who said his side hit the post and bar twice during the match. It also fielded only 10 players, making its performance all the more meritorious. The left wing, Kelly Hoani, scored 13 goals and the centre half, Michael Harvey, grabbed seven for Rangers, which led, 14-0, at half-time. Burwood is last in the competition but never stopped trying, said Mr Van Soest. Rangers lies second in the competition. It suffered a 2-1 loss against Halswell United, which beat Burwood, 11-0. The Rangers side gets a chance to wreak the same havoc against a visiting Australian club side in three weeks when it hosts it at Rangers Park. “I think we have the strongest team in Christchurch,” said Mr Van Soest, who claimed it did not produce its best form when it lost to Halswell. No doubt the beleagured Burwood players would express the same view after losing so heavily in a match which lasted 70 minutes.
