Morris in for hard fight

The Commonwealth Games aspirant, Danny Morris (Bell’s gymnasium), will have a tough fight on his hands when the annual Canterbury boxing trainers' tournament is contested at the Sydenham Rugby League clubrooms tomorrow evening.

In a top-of-the-bill welterweight bout, Morris will clash with Talau Ulukelata, of Wellington, in three, 3min rounds. Last month Ulukelata stopped the well-performed Canterbury boxer, Royce Ellis, in the second round of their fight in Upper Hutt.

The tournament will boast 12 senior bouts and proceeds will go towards the new boxing ring the Canterbury Trainers’ Association intends to buy. Among the other fights will' be a light middleweight contest between another Wellington boxer, Tala Tai, and Leli Toalua (Woolston W.M.C.) while Barry Howie (Papanui) is matched with John Barclay (Olympic) in a welterweight bout. Barclay, enjoying a successful winter, will be going for his fifth victory of the season.

The supporting bouts include Terry O’Shannessy (Olympic) v. Shaun Unwin (Bassant’s gymnasium), middleweight and Nick Adams (Papanui), a premier rugby league player, v. Petelo Alai (Woolston W.M.C.), heavyweight. Alai is a winner of the South Island heavyweight improvers title.
