Black Birch
Sir, —It was gratifying to read M. Johnston’s most recent letter in which he acknowledges the role that the American Black Birch Observatory might play in improving nuclear missile guidance. Black Birch is a United States naval installation with an American director and American and Kiwi astronomers. The peace movement does not refer to Black Birch as a “spy station.” Peace researchers revealed its likely military role about 10 years ago; Mr Johnston has them to thank for the information. New Zealanders should call for an end to star mapping which contributes to nuclear targeting. And they should reject the promotion of an arms industry in New Zealand by our Prime Minister who is desperate to justify spending billions on Anzac frigates. The world is overflowing with weapons manufactured in cS
the First World for sale to the Third World. It would be hypocritical and immoral for New Zealand to try to rescue its sagging economy at the expense of poor and oppressed peoples in Africa, Asia and Latin America. — Yours, etc., ROBERT L. LEONARD. June 15, 1989.
