Housing
Sir, —As a postman in Wellington during the great depression, I remember very vividly the shocking living situations for many people. It was my function to deliver mail, and I delivered mail to many families whose homes were in garages. They either paid no rent, or no more than two shillings and sixpence. People who lived through those terrible years know how traumatic they were. People of today in New Zealand do not want to experience those conditions ever again. Much is now being made about a family living in a garage. There is not enough accommodation available at low rentals. With higher unemployment, it is likely that more families could be living in garages. It is the duty of the Government to provide its citizens with proper housing. The first Labour Government did this through Government housing, for rental only. One notes the very expensive homes being built for the privileged class. It should be possible to erect suitable cheap rental accommodation for those experiencing hard times. — Yours, etc., B. R. HANSEN. June 16, 1989.
