South Africa

Sir,—J. Wilkinson’s prompt response (June 13) to my earlier letter is gratifying, but would have been more impressive had she actually made some attempt to answer my questions, instead of indulging in yet more unsubstantiated and speculative generalities concerning the alleged iniquities of black majority rule. Her claim that “progress is being made” but that “details ... are unimportant” is totally unconvincing. The renewal of emergency rule in South Africa for a fourth year (“The Press” June 10) is surely a matter of some significance; and the existence of a few non-segregated business and residential districts — at the discretion of local white councils — hardly constitutes a “dismantling” of the Group Areas Act. It would be interesting to learn which of Mr Marshall’s statements Truth about Southern Africa believes to be untrue. Otherwise one must assume that Mr Marshall’s criticism of the South African regime’s unwillingness to eradicate apartheid is justified. — Yours, etc., ALISTAIR PRINGLE. June 15, 1989.
