South Africa

Sir,—ln reply to Bill Reid (June 13), because of sanctions, the South African economy is affected through having to pay through the nose to international sanctions-breaking "friends” in import-export deals. Sanctions aside, since 1975 goldmining has lagged behind Canada, America, Australia, in the opening-up of new mines that are close to the surface (easier accessibility), method of drilling, and modernising the mines rail system. The effects of 15 years (19701985) decline in the actual volume of pure gold produced, is additional. “Gold booming” Australian statistics ("The Press,” June 14) is the latest in a series of bad news for South Africa. Black South African business acumen continues to increase; and it is historical fact that the white-minority Government is fearful of even such non-violent progress.—Yours, etc.,

KENNETH EBER MARTIN. June 16, 1989.
