Plaque to former mayor unveiled
A memorial plaque was unveiled yesterday commemorating the efforts of Mr Neville Pickering in promoting the Queen Elizbeth II Park as the main venue for the 1974 Commonwealth Games. Mr Pickering, the Mayor of Christchurch from 1971 to 1974, died in Wellington last year. About 30 people, including Christchurch City councillors and Mr Pickering’s family, gathered in the park foyer for yesterday’s ceremony. Several people paid tribute to his work before
the present Mayor, Sir Hamish Hay, unveiled the plaque. A former Christchurch City councillor who served at the same time as Mr Pickering, Mrs Mollie Clark, said he was a “man of great faith and words.” His faith in the park had never faltered. Mr Pickering’s wife, Mrs Alexia Pickering, said she was delighted he was being remembered in such a way. Mrs Pickering planted a tree at the park in her husband’s memory.
