Anglers want catfish inquiry

A public inquiry into the Government’s decision to allow farming of channel catfish in Northland has been called for by the New Zealand Federation of Freshwater Anglers. The federation’s president, Mr Theo Simeonidis, said the introduction of the species into New Zealand was “an ecological time bomb.”

Research by his organ-

isation had concluded that channel catfish posed a big threat to trout and native freshwater fish species. “There are some very unsatisfactory aspects to the manner in which the decision has been reached. We want this whole process to be opened up to public scrutiny.

“We suspect that a

secret deal allowing channel catfish into the country has been struck as a political trade-off to cover up the Government’s in ability to resolve the Northland Maori fisheries claims,” Mr Simeonidis said. The Minister of Fisheries, Mr Moyle, and his officials had taken no notice of the federation’s concerns, he said.
