Jail overcrowding not new
New Zealand prisons have been overcrowded since prisons were first built in New Zealand, Paparua’s superintendent, Mr Dennis Pashley, says. Mr Pashley told visitors at the opening of the prison’s 60-bed block yesterday that from the first
day at Canterbury’s first prison in Lyttelton there were more prisoners than the prison could handle. Paparua’s new block which has been in use for some months had eased the pressure there. About 50 people attended the opening cere-
mony. A hangi lunch was served and a group from the prison performed.
The block was built almost solely by prisoners. Mr Pashley said the block had been needed so desperately that inmates were moved in as each room was completed.
