Pioneer placed seventh
Pioneer finished seventh and Shirley ninth at the Australian club national volleyball tournament which ended yesterday in Sydney. Pioneer, of Christchurch, the defending New Zealand men’s club champion, finished with a three win, six loss record. Its wins came against Australian Capital Territory (3-1), Townsville (3-0) and Shirley (3-0). The latter’s nine straight losses condemned it to last place. The Pioneer coach, Tony Barnett, said the top Australian sides had too much pol-
ish for the New Zealand teams but the gap between them was not as marked as the scores suggested. He was especially pleased with the form of two of the younger Pioneer players, Hugh McCutcheon and Mike Pepper. South Australia beat Victoria, 3-0, in the final after losing, 2-3, to the same team in section play. The Australian sides were shadow state teams rather than clubs, making it doubly hard for Pioneer and Shirley to achieve positive results.
