Burnside battles to hold Carlton

A depleted Burnside I team battled to hold a feisty Carlton team at bay in the Christchurch premier women’s hockey secondary competition at Porritt Park on Saturday, Burnside winning 2-0.

Carlton did more of the attacking, but its finishing around the circle let it down badly. Even Shirley Haig, normally a reliable and accurate goal-shooter, was off target. Both Burnside goals came in the first half. The first was scored by Jane Earnshaw, who controlled the ball well in a dribble to the back line.

The second goal, mid-way through the half, was nudged in by Jendy Judd after a melee in the circle.

In the second half, Haig instilled more enthusiasm into the Carlton forwards and they began to attack strongly. Lorraine Rouse, the Burnside centre-half, kept order in the defence with her steady play, and Katrina Withers in goal made two timely saves and several other clearances after the defence was breached. Henrietta Caroil tackled and passed well in the Carlton defence and helped to reduce the effectiveness of ' Burnside’s two best forwards, Earnshaw and Sharon Bell. The Harewood forwards

enjoyed the space available to them in the mid-fields, and Michelle Davis and Lisa Sutherland, who formed the Harewood right flank, played particularly well.

It was Sutherland who scored the first goal. The second was added by Louise Good, who swept in a cross from the right. The second-half goals were added by Sutherland, Helen Littleworth from a penalty corner, and Leah Grafton.

The Selwyn team, although outclassed, attacked at every opportunity and caused consternation in the Harewood defence several times in the first half. Woolston, which won the championship two weeks ago, had a comfortable 5-1 . win against Burnside 11. Woolston passed the ball confidently and it was this aspect of its game which created many openings in the Burnside II defence.

Maia Lewis, playing at inside left, scored two of the goals from penalty corners. Two of the younger players in the Woolston team, Sara McLaughlin (2) and Anna Wormaid scored the other goals. Woolston’s dominance was evident from the penalty-cor-ner count — it forced 19 in the match to one awarded to Burnside.
