Leaders move clear of field
University beat Selwyn 2-1 on Saturday evening to move into third place in the Christchurch premier men’s hockey championship, but more significantly the result placed to two leading teams, Pegasus and Harewood, in an almost unassailable position at the head of the points table. With four matches left Harewood is five points clear of University in third place, and Harewood in turn is a point behind Pegasus.
UNIVERSITY 2, SELWYN 1 University scored the only goal of the first half when Mark Tynan netted from a penalty-corner layoff, and early in the second half he scored from the same variation. Selwyn gave itself some hope when Robin Wilson scored from a penalty corner mid-way through the half, but the tenacity of the University defence, led by Tynan and Greg Pierce, proved too much for the Selwyn forwards, to overcome. REDCLIFFS 2, HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS 2 Redcliffs looked to have control of the game as it built a two-goal lead by the interval. It was more positive on attack and it restricted Old Boys to a few sporadic attacks
that were usually dealt with before they reached the Redcliffs circle.
Both the Redcliffs goals came from penalty corners. David Milts scored the first and Jeremy Paynter the second after the initial shot hit a goal-post and rebounded to Paynter. Both Old Boys goals came from penalty corners struck by Kerry Thomas. The first was disputed by Redcliffs. It was awarded after the ball was lifted into the circle — not permitted in the rules — and struck a Redcliffs players on the body. HAREWOOD 4, SYDENHAM 0. Harewood had 80 per cent of possession in the game and was constantly launching attacks at the Sydenham defence, but careless shooting and passing in and near the circle cost it goals. Marty Fitzsimons in the Sydenham goal also had a good game, blocking and clearing competently. Phil Temple (2) and Glenn Hayde (2) scored the goals for Harewood. PEGASUS 10, WOOLSTON 1 The first 10 minutes gave no indication of the flood of goals to follow. The match was even in the early stages and it was Woolston which scored the first goal after a melee in the Pegasus circle. That setback stung the Pegasus side into action and immediately there was a greater urgency and crispness in its passing. By the interval Pegasus was ahead 4-1. Guy Edlin, who struck the penalty corners for Pegasus, scored four goals, Craig Mcßobb three, John Radovonich two, and Peter Motion one.
