Easy race win for Taylor

The 1988 World Veteran Games women’s cross-coun-try champion, Prue Taylor, easily won the combined senior and veteran women’s Bkm cross-country race in the Holloway Memorial meeting at McLeans Island in Christchurch on Saturday. Taylor, aged 42, established an early lead and built on it over the flat, fast two-lap course to finish nearly two minutes ahead of the next woman, Sumner’s Anna Warren.

Taylor’s time was 29min 335, 7s faster than her clubmate Mary O'Connor recorded when she won the race last year. O’Connor and several top Christchurch athletes were in Dunedin competing in the annual Edmond Cup crosscountry races.

Don Greig (New Brighton) bounced back from injury problems to have his first cross-country win for some time, taking the senior men’s 16km title comfortably. Like Taylor, Greig led from the start and was never challenged. His time was about 2min 30s. faster than the winning time of Tony Good (Olympic) last year. In the men’s race, Rob Howell (St Martin’s) fought off an early challenge from

Barry Hart (Olympic), then followed Greig around the four-lap course well clear of the rest of the field.

Hart withdrew, leaving a former course winner, Mel Radcliffe (New Brighton) to fight it out with Kevin Barnes (Christchurch) for third place. Radcliffe had a slight advantage over the numerous low hurdles and made his break on Barnes at the last hurdle on the last lap. Anna Warren, although beaten by Taylor, took the senior title because Taylor’s University Club had entered Taylor as a veteran. Warren was in fourth place on the first lap, then passed Christine Jennings (Sumner) andcaught Christine Todd (University) after about 3km, while Jennings also passed Todd midway through the second lap. The most impressive juniors were the New Zealand junior cross-country representative, Richard Lindroos (New Brighton) with a fast time in the junior Bkm; and Kylie Martin (St Martins), whose time in winning the girls’ under-14 grade was the second fastest of all the girls under 20.
