Canterbury A jackpot beginning at just over $16,000 is a feature of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s first winter meeting at Riccarton on Saturday. The jackpot will be run on races five to nine inclusive. Interest in the Haast Steeplechase has been boosted by the presence of Yorksmith which was withdrawn from his engagement at Egmont yesterday in favour of Riccarton. Yorksmith ■ is trained by Steven Gillies at Awapuni and will be ridden by the trainer. Gillies had originally aimed Yorksmith at the Homeby Steeples at the Christchurch Hunt next week. Kristian Nickson, an .apprentice with Herb Bergerson, will be coming south also and Godsin is one of his rides.
