Plane painted in ‘red nose’ trial

By

TONY WALL

Air ! New Zealand

painted ~ the nose of a Friendship red yesterday in a trial for “red noseday” on "September 8. The day is to raise funds for cot death research. The foreman of Air New Zealand’s Chchbased painting department, Mr Dave Johnson, said the selection of paint was no easy task. The paint cannot contain metal as it would interfere with the plane’s radar system.

It cannot be water-

washable because it would come off in the air and possibly get into the engines. Air New Zealand plans to colour the noses of about six of its domestic fleet. Staff at the airport’s main hangar have been puzzled by the new colour scheme. “They didn’t know what to believe,” he said. Money will be raised by the sale of plastic noses for $2, proceeds from which will be distributed by Air New Zealand throughout the country.
