Bravery awards
PA Wellington Two men who risked their lives in a night rescue of three people injured in a crashed plane have been awarded the Lifesaving Medal of the Order of St John. The men, Dr Thomas Gibson, of Dannevirke, and Mr Ricky Lucas, of Palmerston North, flew in darkness in a helicopter to the crash site in the Ruahine Ranges in July.
Dr Gibson slid to the ground on a chain to administer first aid to the pilot, who was seriously injured, and two passengers.
