PA Auckland Empire Rose heads a list of 77 New Zealand horses nominated for the 5NZ2.357 million Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 7. Most of the country’s best stayers are entered for the big race which this year carries a winning prize of more than SNZI.S million plus a $NZ45,000 gold cup. New Zealand representation is also likely to be strong in other rich races at the spring carnivals with 47 entered for the Caulfield Cup (winner’s purse $NZ844,000), 43 for the VRC Derby ($NZ633,000), 17 for the VRC Oaks ($NZ316,000) and 25 for the Golden Slipper (SNZI.S million). The Victoria Racing Club received 628 nominations, the same number as last year, by deadline time for the Melbourne Cup.
V.R.C. official Tony McGrath said the total would not be finalisedfor
a few days in case any nominations went missing after being lodged at agencies. McGrath said six Northern Hemisphere stayers had been entered direct by the Newmarket-based International Racing Bureau, including Top Class, Al Mufti, and Heavenly Manna. The Clive Brittaintrained stallion Top Class ran a gallant second to Poetic Prince in the SUSI million Tancred International Stakes (2400 m at Rosehill on March 18.
