Waitangi plans opposed

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington

A National member of Parliament opposes his party’s plans to restrict the power of the Waitangi Tribunal. Mr Doug Graham (Remuera) says cancelling claims lodged with the tribunal over events before 1975 would cause far more racial tension than considering them.

National has indicated that on becoming the Government it would withdraw the power the Labour Governemnt had

given the tribunal to hear land claims earlier than 1975 — the limit set by the previous National Government — and back to 1840.

Mr Graham supported comments by the tribunal’s director that land marches might recur if claims were discounted. Racial harmony and progress as one nation would not take place unless and until those who believed they had a valid claim had had it tested at an independent judicial hearing.
