N.L.P. faces big test
By
PETER LUKE
in Wellington New Labour will come of age this week-end as members gather in Wellington for the party’s foundation conference. Organisers expect about 400 members to attend the day conference, which is a big public test of the fledgling party. New Labour was launched in Sydenham on May 1, after the resignation from Labour of the Sydenham member of Parliament, Mr Jim Anderton. A political guessing game has emerged as to whether New Labour will wither
away, or whether it can build on its enthusiastic start and go on to take targeted seats such as Sydenham and the West Coast. This week-end’s conference will be opened by the party’s interim president, Mr Matt McCarten, of Auckland, but later this morning an hour has been set aside for two-minute statements from members. Throughout the conference the party’s “commissions” will report on the constitution, policy, and society and the economy.
