Full Alert wins for Behrns
PA Hawera Robbie Behrns, a Pukekohe trainer, had his first winner of the season yesterday, but he wasn’t on hand to see Full Alert win the feature at the Hawera Harness Racing Club’s meeting. Behrns, aged 35, was too busy tending to his team of more than 20 young horses at home to make the trip south and Full Alert was left in the care of private horse float operator, Paul Chalken, also of Pukekohe. Most credit should probably go to reinsman Maurice McKendry, who rated the five-year-old to perfection. Full Alert was three wide early but improved to lead with 1000 m left in the 1800 m race.
McKendry toyed with the field until half-way down the straight where he put two lengths on the chasers, headed by the talented filly Fast Spender. At the line Full Alert had a length and a half to spare over Fast Spender, which just held out Aramiro Lad.
Full Alert is owned by Pukekohe market gardeners, Eddie and Bernie Lim.
