Symbolize takes time honours
Symbolize, a four-year-old Noodlum mare from a half-sister to the useful performer Tribunal (1:58), took time honour among the 2400 m pacing qualifiers on a sticky track at Addington Raceway yesterday morning.
Trained at Prebbleton by Allan Georgeson, Symbolize kept up a solid clip in front throughout to record 3:13.7, holding out the converted pacer Border (3g Clever Innocence —Three Tens) by a length and a half. She ran her last 800 m in 60.8.
Border, which in March contested the N.Z. Trotting Stakes, returned 3:14 yesterday. A half-brother to the 1:54.8 pacer Memphis, and to seven trotting winners, Border is trained at Rangiora by Dick Petrie. Although she only returned 3:17.1, Atomique (3f Soky’s Atom—Adios Paris) was impressive coming from back in the
field to win going away by a length, the leaders running their last 800 m in 59.8.
Atomique, a half-sister to a 1:58.5 three-year-old in Australia, Paris Player, is from the same Parisienne branch of the Bessie B. family as Garcon D’or, and prepared at Yaldhurst by Peter Blackmore. Others to qualify over 2400 m were: Nero’s Dream (3c Nero’s 8.8.— Coronita Dream) in 3:15.9; Gerber (3g Main Star— Mitcham) in 3:16.8, overcoming an early break; and Flying Heather (3f Roydon Albatross—Jovial Heather), from a halfsister to the outstanding pacer, Preux Chevalier (1:54.3), which returned 3:15.7.
Game Key (3f Game Pride—Spangled Key) recorded a respectable 3:35.7 for 2600 m in the trotters qualifying trial at the start of the day. She is trained at West Melton by Mike Austin and held out
Jenny’s Rocket (2f Meadow Roydon—Jenny Gee), from the same family as Harvey Wilson and Zebec, by a neck. Jenny’s Rocket, sixth in last Friday’s N.Z. Two-Year-Old Trotting Stakes at Addington for trainer Maurice O’Leary, returned 3:35.8, well inside the filly record for her age group, but placed times are not recognised for records.
O’Leary is giving consideration to campaigning Jenny’s Rocket in the John F. Jones series for her age group at Cambridge and Auckland during this month and July. Wendy Jayne (4m Dryham Lea —Jane Lea) took out the 2600 m (stand) qualifying pace in 3:31.4 for trainer Craig Newfield, while the Barry Lilley-trained Invigorator (3c Light Lord—Timely Girl) was a four lengths winner of the 2600 m (mobile) qualifying pace in 3:30.6.
