Atrapar retired

NZPA Wellington The former top-class galloper, Atrapar, has been retired. Atrapar, a nine-year-old Adios II gelding, failed in his latest campaign to produce his best form but has been troubled by recurring leg problems. He was bred by his owner-trainer the late Bill Calder, at Levin and in recent times has been trained by Calder’s son, Byne. From the Targui mare Mexiquenna, which was also bred by Calder and won six races, Atrapar has been a splendid performer over several seasons having won 13 races and more than $250,000 in stakes. A dual Group winner, Atrapar’s most noteworthy victory was in the 1985 group one Jarden Mile at Trentham. Other Group wins included the New Zealand Japan International Stakes at Te Rapa, the Star Way Stakes at Te Aroha, the Levin Cup and the Lion Red Cup at Awapuni. He was also Group placed on many occasions on both sides of the Tasman. A half-sister to Atrapar by Kampala was sold at last Monday’s Gold Rush Sale at Hamilton for $13,000.
