Shuttiers perform well
PA Wellington New Zealand shuttiers are producing eye-catching performances in the individual events of the world badminton championships in Jakarta, says the team manager, Chris Bullen. Mr Bullen said from the Indonesian capital that Rhona Robertson and Lynn Horne in particular gave outstanding performances in the second round, despite losing. "Lynn's play against Kir«en Larsen of Denmark, who is the European number one,
was the best I’ve seen by a New Zealand woman player in a long time,” he said. Horne lost 7-11, 8-11, but not before pegging the Dane back at 7-7 and 8-8 in the first and second sets. Robertson lost to the top seed and current world and All-England champion, Li Lingwei of China, by the respectable scoreline of 8-11 in the first game before succumbing 4-11 in the second to the Chinese player’s superior courtcraft. Sabine Ploner (Austria) 11-7, 11-1 while Katrin Blair lost to Japan’s Kimiko Jinnau 2-11, 8-11. New Zealand’s Julie Still was beaten in her match, by Lee Jung-me, of South Korea, 11-4, 11-12, 12-9. In the men’s second round, New Zealand’s No. 1 player, Phil Horne, beat Christophe Jeanjean (France) 15-3, 1512. Dean Galt beat his opponent, Duminda Jayakodi (Sri Lanka) 15-7, 15-10. However, New Zealand’s other player, Glen Stewart, was beaten by Igor Dmitriev (Soviet Union) 15-12, 1-15, 15-11.
