Concert preview
A new series of Concert Preview lectures begins on June 15. The morning lectures, at the Department of Continuing Education of the University of Canterbury, are intended to increase the concergoer’s enjoyment of the Christchurch musical scene by discussing and illustrating works to be performed in the city in June, July and August.
The course will discuss works by Martiniu and Edwin Carr to be played by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, works by Anthony Ritchie and Shostakovich to be played by the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra; Shostakovich’s fourth string quartet, which will be played by the Shostakovich Quartet; two-piano music by Messiaen and
Stravinsky, which will be played by Michael Houstoun and Diedre Irons; Carl Orff’s "Catulli Carmine,” to be sung by the Jubilate Singers; and Bruckner’s “Mass in E minor,” to be sung by the Christchurch Harmonic Society. Applications for the course close on June 5 with the Department of Continuing Education.
