Protected bird shot
Killing a pied stilt at J Lake Ellesmere last Feb- • ruary landed Norman Charles Wanhalla in the ; District Court yesterday. ; . Judge Frampton con- . victed Wanhalla and J ordered him to pay $65 : court costs. Mr John Brandts- ; Giesen, for the North Can- ’ terbury Acclimatisation ' Society, said a ranger was
patrolling the Irwell area on Lake Ellesmere about 9.30 a.m.. on February 5. “The ranger picked up a pied stilt, which was still limp and warm, lying about 20m from a group of shooters. “The defendant admitted that he had shot the stilt, saying that ‘it got in the way when I was shooting at some geese flying
over.’ “Pied stilts are quite distinctive and it is the duty of shooters to ensure that protected birds are not shot.” Wanhalla told the Court he shot the bird accidentally while shooting at geese. Judge Frampton did not impose a fine.
