Free health care ‘a priority’

Free health care is likely to be a main policy of the New Labour Party, the party’s leader, Mr Jim Anderton, said yesterday.

He told a meeting of the Timaru Superannuitants’ Association that the party could introduce a system of paying salaries to doctors in return for free medical care. He was confident the new party would adopt

such a policy -which he likened to the British National Health Service. “Even Maggie Thatcher runs a free health service in England when direct medical care is free to everyone in the community,” he said. Mr Anderton said the idea was similar to insurance — the costs were borne by everyone so that help was given to people when they needed it.
