Anderton break

Sir,—l thought Marjorie McCreanor’s letter (May 3) very good until I came to her comment on “the huge overseas debt faced by this Government in 1984.” On checking the overseas debt at May 12, I find the figures show the debt be built up by all previous governments, including Labour, to be as follows: 1984, $18.854B; 1989, $40.2648 — more than doubled in four and a half years. As for the last sentence of Marjorie McCreanor’s letter ("If you cannot accept the majority vote you are better out”), we will see how this applies after the 1990 election. — Yours, etc.,

H. LILLEY. May 16, 1989.
