Overseas aid
Sir,—Our Government appears not to see any contradiction in supplying the needs (at taxpayers’ expense) of a foreign Power in preference to our own domestic needs. Precisely at the point when post office closings were set in train, including such places as Karamea and Hanmer Springs, as well as many urban offices, Vanuatu, a Libyanbacked economy, qualified for assistance. In 1987 the Government allocated S3.IM, thereby fully funding the cost of a University of the South Pacific. The structure was scheduled for completion last October and in the last fortnight the Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer, presided at the opening ceremony. In a further magnanimous gesture, the Minister pledged a further $400,000 for the construction of an airport runway. The public will find it difficult to equate such expenditure against the pruning of our own domestic services. — Yours, etc., M. W. TOOHEY. May 17, 1989.
