New life-saving drug

NZPA London A new British “designer” drug costing nearly £5OO ($1388M) for a single injection could halve the number of deaths from heart attacks, according to doctors.

The drug, Eminase, developed at a cost of £125 million ($347M) by the pharmaceutical manufacturers, Beechams, has been hailed as one of the most significant ad-

vances in emergency treatment of heart attacks in recent years. Trials showed that Eminase — which rapidly dissolves blood clots — reduced mortality among heart attack patients by almost 50 per cent. The drug acts faster and lasts longer than other anti-thrombosis agents, which have to be administered by prolonged infusion. Administered as soon

as heart attack symptoms are diagnosed, possibly by ambulance staff, it helps keep an artery open, prevents other clots forming and reduces the risk of heart damage. The British Heart Foundation’s director. Dr Desmond Julian, said the new drug would save many thousands of lives. Doctors in 11 European countries are testing Eminase.
