Workers served surprise notice

A group of clothing workers in Christchurch were told they would be made redundant two minutes before taking their annual holiday last Friday. The secretary of the Clothing Trades Union, Mr Hugh McCrory, sid the union hoped to meet Austin Brown, Ltd, next week to negotiate a redundancy for the 26 workers.

He said that under the award the union and

workers were supposed to get four weeks notice of redundancies. ‘We have had some strange redundancy situations but. it is the first time we’ve had a garbled telephone conversation from the employer minutes before the workers were told,” he said.

The company made women’s clothes. Company management not available for comment yesterday.
