Consultation

Sir, —Full marks to R. A. Smith (May 9) for identifying so readily the subject of my previous letter; but the validity of grouping him with Hart and other so-called rascals is debatable. How does R. A. Smith regard the action of a foreign Power in ignoring our Prime Minister and conferring instead with a member of the Opposition? If President Bush were to visit New Zealand, he should properly be greeted by our own Head of State, the GovernorGeneral, then perhaps handed over to a couple of undersecretaries, and Mr Bolger could show him some Rotorua mud and the Punakaiki blowholes. After all, we are, by and large, not altogether lacking in diplomacy and courtesy. Meanwhile department heads would entertain members of the Democratic Party, here for some not altogether dispassionate reconnoitring. What is sauce for the kiwi is surely sauce for the eagle. — Yours, etc., W. A. SUTTON. May 11, 1989.
