Fewer unions predicted

PA Wellington New Zealand may have about 80 unions in a few years, substantially fewer than when the Government introduced its union streamlining Labour Rela-. tions Act in 1987. The Minister of Labour, Mr Rodger, told Parliament yesterday that at the end of March this’* year

there were 135 unions, excluding State ones. Of that number, 54 had fewer than the act’s stated minimum membership of 1000 and were planning to amalgamate with others or take other action to secure their future. The reduction in union numbers followed a trend since the act came to power.
