N. Shore ‘needs new harbour crossing’

PA Auckland A second Auckland harbour crossing is essential to the future of the North Shore, the Takapuna City Council says. The council’s transport engineering consultant, Mr Grant Smith, has told the Auckland Regional Authority’s urban transport committee that projected increases of about 50 per cent on North Shore roads meant the arterial routes would not cope with the density of traffic. The council’s own transportation study completed in 1986 concluded that a main new harbour cross-

ing was required. The council’s proposed crossing would run from Devonport to the city and would carry 5170 vehicles an hour during peak times in 2001 — almost 2000 more than A.R.A. estimates. The council recommended to the authority a study team of both Auckland and Takapuna City Council staff and the A.R.A. look into the second crossing, and a group from the Takapuna council, A.R.A. and the National Roads Board look at improvements needed to the northern corridor.
