Windows broken in gang clash

Two shop windows were shattered and a car was set upon with baseball bats during a clash between skinheads and Black Power gang members in Christchurch on Monday. The incident happened near the Addingtown Mall in Lincoln Road, just before noon. A car with gang members in it was attacked. Several windows were broken and panels damaged. Two shop windows were broken when the fight spilled on to the pavement.

Inspector Chris Cole would not confirm the

gang’s identity, but members of the Black Power gang were working on the damaged car just after the incident. Mr Cole said the gang members alleged the attackers belonged to another Christchurch gang. However, other onlookers described them as skinheads. They left the area in a dark green or black Austin Maxi. Mr Cole said the gang members were taken for questioning to Christchurch Central Police Station, but were uncooperative. Inquiries are continuing.
