Pier may be part of Brighton plan

A second proposal received for the Christchurch City Council’s New Brighton foreshore development site is also believed to include a pier. A $65 million proposal received from a New Brighton businessman, Mr Tony Steadman, and partners outlines a 10-storey hotel, three-storey amusement arcade, pier and aquarium. It is understood the second proposal, delivered to the council by the deadline last Friday, also features a pier as an extension of the existing mall. It is not surpising that developments for the recreation development zone should incorporate a pier, New Brighton’s trademark for so long before it was demolished in 1965. The council’s director of housing and property, Mr Bill Morgan, said both proposals would be investigated and reports brought to the property and promotion committee, probably in June. A hotel is not a permitted use of the 7873 sq m zone on Marine Parade. The zone was offered to developers inviting ideas for development after the council dropped the oceanarium project approved for a Wellington promoter.
