Wang to appeal conviction

Xiao Jing Wang, jailed for five years for the fatal disembowelling of her husband, is appealing against her manslaughter conviction and sentence. Her counsel, Mr Philip Hall, confirmed yesterday that the necessary papers were filed with the Court of Appeal in Wellington last week. No hearing date has been set. Wang, aged 35. faced a murder charge at her High Court trial in Christchurch but was found guilty of manslaughter. Evidence emerged during the trial that Jing Hua Li was stabbed, strangled and had a pillow placed over his head by Wang. The defence had maintained it was an act of self-preservation, with Mr Hall claiming at sentencing that Wang had endured provocation of the worst type Imaginable in a marriage. The Chief Justice, Mr Justice Eichelbaum, said in sentencing Wang: "The sentence of the Court must carry the clear message that even the background of an intensely unhappy marriage does not justify a deliberate slaying."
