Cleared lawyer back at work
A Christchurch lawyer acquitted last month of conspiring to defraud the Inland Revenue Department through GST refund claims has rejoined the firm, Loughnan, Jarman and Company.
An advertisement placed in the public notices of Saturday’s edition of “The Press,” said Mr Romeo Margaritis rejoined the firm on March 29.
Mr Margaritis, aged 33, was one of two men acquitted by a High Court jury after a 12-day trial. Five men were found guilty and were sentenced yesterday. The president of the Canterbury District Law Society, Mr Chris McVeigh, said yesterday that Mr Margaritis applied late in March for a practising certificate. Mr McVeigh said practising certificates were issued to suitably qualified people who applied and paid the necessary fee.. He said Mr Margaritis’s case would be discussed by the Canterbury District Law Society Council at its meeting later this month.
The council could decide to take no action or refer the matter to the complaints committee.
