Anglers might pay for salmon

Anglers might have to help fund from their licence fees the release of salmon, says a Christchurch MAFFish official. Dr Peter Todd, the salmon group leader for MAFFish, said fees did not fund the running of the Glenariffe research station or the Silverstream hatchery.

The two centres have released about 320,000 fish this season.

A one-off cash grant of $63,000 had been made from the national executive of the Acclimatisation Societies to MAFFish to fund releases of salmon from Glenariffe this year.

It was the first time such a grant had been made, he said. If anglers wanted the releases to continue from Glenariffe and Silverstream, then they would have to help fund them, he said.

How much anglers would have to pay would be “a matter for negotiation,” Dr Todd said.

The angler levy on fishing licence sales is now used to fund research.
