Grigg wins final area trial

The final Moore’s Riding Wear area trial for the Can-terbury-Westland team was held at the Rotherham A and P Showgrounds last Sunday with a testing cross country course.

In the A.l section, Nigil Grigg, riding Just Dougy, was fourth after the dressage phase and with clear cross country and show jumping rounds finished first on his dressage score of 38.00. Kate Perkins and High Time also finished on their dressage score of 39.00 in second. This combination also won the E’en Do trophy for the most consistent performance over the three trials, for the second successive year. In third position was Elizabeth Liddell who had one dropped rail in the show jumping. Amanda Brown and Golden Girl led the field after the dressage in the D.C. section and had faultless crosscountry and show, jumping rounds for a winning score of 20.50. This combination entered in only two of the trials, but still finished top of the section. Second was Heather Muldoon on Charlotte Jane who also had clear cross-country and show jumping rounds to'finish on 29.25. Results were: A.l dressage: A. Vincent’s Penny Lane, 32.00, 1; A. Geddes’ Nibs, 33.25, 2; E. Riddell’s Bahrain, 35.75, 3. D.C. dressage: A. Brown’s Golden, 20.50, 1; H. Muldoon’s Charlotte Jane, 29.25, 2; A. McCrostie’s Craven A. of Miltondale, 30.50, 3. The teams are: A.l: K. Perkins’ High Time, N. Grigg’s Dougy, P. Jarvis’ Ace High. First reserve, E. Liddell; second reserve, J. Jarvis. D.C. A. Brown’s

Golden Girl, A. McCrostie’s Craven A of Miltondale, K. Teague’s Woodbine idol. First reserve, H. Muldoon, second reserve, K. Skene. Team trainer: Mrs S. Field-Dodgson. Manager: Mrs E. Burt. The Guthrey Travel open novice one day horse trial held in conjunction with the Hurunui Pony Club area trial, at Rotherham on Sunday was won by Catriona Mackay on Mastermind. This gave the combination their first victory since upgrading to intermediate last season. Competition was strong and Julie Srhoy on Mr Quinn incurred time-faults on the crosscountry phase to relegate her to second place. The talented young combination of Anna Damiano and Maia collected

time-faults to finish fourth, and Robin Wilding and Shamrock dropped a rail in the show-jumping to finish third. Kirsty Silcock on Sweet Vienna used a novel method of negotiating the Pedestrian Crossing. They walked through a gap in the rails and out between the flags without having to jump the obstacle and lost little time in the process.

The current Guthrey travel novice circuit leaders, Anne Nichol and Zebadee with five points, did not start. The competition will be decided at the one day trial at Riccarton on ANZAC Day. Sahoy is the new leader with nine points. Final placings: C. Mackay, Mastermind, 29.4, J. Sahoy, Mr Quinn, 30.75, 2; R. Wilding, Shamrock, 31.95, 3.
