Three added to Pan Pacific swim team

PA Timaru Two Wellington swimmers, Michelle Burke and Peter Doig, have been added to the New Zealand team to compete at the Pan Pacific competition in Japan, by the New Zealand Swimming Authority. Burke, who has already qualified for the Commonwealth Games next year, was a surprise ommission from the original team announced at the conclusion of the national championships in Auckland last month. Three places in the squad were kept open until March 31, to enable overseas-based swimmers, other than the Olympic bronze medallists, Anthony Mosse and Paul Kingsman, to submit long-course times. Announcing the names, chairman of the New Zealand Swimming Authority, Mr Noel Smith, said he was disappointed no long-course times had been received from the New Zealand swimmers on scholarships at United States universities. The 1986 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Sylvia Hulme, Muffy Torrance, Fiona McLay, Ross Anderson and Richard Tapper are all attending United States universities. The host association, Japan, has offered to pay the fares of Mosse, Kingsman and a Seoul Olympic competitor, Sharon Musson. The Pan Pacifies, in August, will be a major build-up meeting for the New Zealand team, competing against strong United States, Canadian, Japanese and Australian squads.
