America’s Cardboard Cup trials at Groynes

Could a cleverly designed cardboard craft succeed, where “Kiwi Magic” technology has already set the precedent.

The International America’s Cardboard Cup Regatta, held annually at Crystal Lake, Illinois could see a New Zealander holding another Auld Mug — even if only a humble cardboard copy.

Radio N.Z. and Roundtable have launched a unique boating opportunity where New Zealanders do not need multi million dollar backing to indulge in boat designing, innovative propulsion and crew supremacy.

The ingredients neces-

sary for America’s Cardboard Cup entrants are a few sheets of Cardboard (which will be supplied at no charge by Printpac — U.E.8.), a fair quantity of paint and some tape.

The $lO entry fee and profits from the competitions will go the charity — Life Education Centres. These centres are mobile classrooms designed to teach youngsters the dangers of drug abuse by showing the awesome complexity of the body’s functions.

Racing is divided into three categories: — Boats powered by canoe paddles, oars or Kayak paddles; Boats powered by all other forms of wind or

muscle-powered propulsion devices and boats designed and built on the day of racing.

Radio N.Z. stations in cities throughout N.Z. are already arranging their America’s Cardboard Cup Regattas with the help of National Round Table and on April 23rd Auckland’s Newstalk IZB will host their Regional Competition and the National Final on Lake Pupuke. The winning skipper and crew of the National Final will win a trip to Crystal lake, Illinois where they will represent New Zealand in the International America’s Cardboard Cup Regatta. Already established as a highly popular event

overseas the Cardboard Craft has become increasingly sophisticated in design, ranging from sleek real challenge lookalikes to feats of engineering fantasy.

How “Farr” New Zealanders will go to grab the ‘“Auld Cardboard Mug” will be revealed on the water of The Groynes, Johns Road, on Saturday, April 15 at 11.00 a.m. Entry form suppliers:
