Performing arts threatened

Threatened cuts in funding to the Arts Council would trigger a crisis in the New Zealand arts industry, the chairwoman of the New Zealand Association of Professional Performing Arts, Ms Elizabeth Airey, has warned. She said the cuts could cause the demise of some of New Zealand’s professional performing arts companies. The Department of Internal Affairs, which funded the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, had hinted that cuts in Government spending would be passed on to performance groups. Performing arts companies were already active in seeking financial support and sponsorship, in a difficult economic climate. “Funding cuts could see the collapse of some of our most valuable companies," Ms Airey said. Association members will take their concerns to the Minister of Arts, Dr Bassett, and to the Arts Council. “There is nowhere in the world where professional performing arts companies survive on box office receipts alone,” Ms Airey said.

She said performing arts companies had to have some “realistic additional financial support."
