Singer’s father murdered

NZPA-Reuter Nairobi A gang of burglars armed with knives killed British singer Roger Whittaker’s father at his Nairobi mansion at the week-end, said Kenyan police on Monday. The police said they are treating the death of Edward Whittaker, aged 84, as murder. The gang of three men

bound and gagged Whittaker before killing him early on Saturday. His wife, who arrived after the break-in, was also tied up but was not injured. The singer, who flew to Nairobi from London after learning of his father’s death, was born and raised in Kenya, where his father had lived since 1929. The burglars fled in one

of the Whittakers’ cars after stealing property from the house. The police said they were searching for the car and were questioning one of the family’s employees. Whittaker owned a grocery store in colonial Kenya until his retirement in 1948. Like many former Britons, he chose to stay on in Kenya after independence in 1963.
