Hampton rewarded for his efforts

Peter Hampton’s tennis season was capped off last evening when he won the “Personality of the Year” award at the end of season gathering at Wilding Park. Hampton’s efforts during the season found favour with the selectors ahead of Amanda Trail and Alistair Hunt. The youthful Hunt and Trail were nominated last season and their continuing

successful exploits on court prove the calibre of their selection. “We felt that Peter, with his achievements in the Canterbury open and closed tournaments and the fact that he was a leading light for Shirley this season makes him a worthy winner,” said Tony Ralph, the chairman of the competitions committee.

But Mr Ralph tempered this statement emphasising that results are only part of the award’s purpose. “Results are not the only thing that the selection is based on,” he said. Hampton has made his mark this season in both administration and playing. His leadership of Shirley in the national inter-club league and fulfilment of

commitments as a Canterbury selector have been mingled with a demanding playing schedule. Hampton won the Canterbury closed championships, was runner-up in the Canterbury open and was a member of the winning Canterbury team at the interdistricts in Wellington. Brendon Furness, the fifth man in the inter-districts

team followed up his unwitting debut as the speaker for the side in Wellington, by accepting the trophies on behalf of the men’s and women’s line-up. He handled the situation with as much decorum as in Wellington. There was a healthy attendance of 120 people at the function in the wake of Canterbury’s dual success at the inter-districts.
