Mayor to fly gratis

By

RODGER KINGSBURY

Blenheim’s pending sister-city relationship with Tendo, in Japan, has been endorsed by Air New Zealand. The airline will provide free air travel for the Mayor, Mr Leo McKendry, so that he can sign the agreement in Tendo in July. Mr McKendry earlier this week bypassed a council resolution to pay for his travel and that of the deputy mayor and acting general manager from council funds. Public accusations of a misappropriation of ratepayers’ money prompted Mr McKendry to decide to pay his own way.

The manager of Air New Zealand in Blenheim, Mr Mike Blair, said yesterday that the visit to Tendo was very important for Blenheim and Marlborough. “A number of people in Marlborough have totally misunderstood what the Tendo trip is all about and the value of the sister-city relationship. Air New Zealand will therefore provide Mr McKendry with free return air travel,” Mr Blair said. Air New Zealand was investing $6OO million in new aircraft mainly to meet the potential of the Japanese tourist market. “We believe Marlborough will benefit considerably as a result,” he said.
