Refit interest high

PA Dunedin A large number of overseas companies have expressed an interest in the refit contract for the Arahura, the second Cook Strait ferry to be upgraded, said Searail’s general manager, Mr Ivan Gough, yesterday.

Tenders for the refit will close on April 7. Mr Gough said New Zealand and overseas company representatives had been looking closely at the ferry refit.

The interest from overseas was not unex-

pected, because the refit was a larger job than the refit of the Arahanga being done by a Dunedin firm, Sims Engineering, Ltd, he said.

The Arahanga has passenger accommodation for 100 people, compared with the Arahura which can accommodate 1085.

“The changes are substantial in terms of the changes to facilities for passengers,” Mr Gough said.

The successful tender will be announced about a week after tenders close.
