Slight rise in cases in South Canterbury

By

CHRIS MAHONY

Cases of salmonella are up on previous years in the Timaru-Ashburton area but the district does not seem to be as badly affected as some other areas. The Medical Officer of the Health Development Unit in Timaru, Dr Steve Gee, said yesterday that salmonella cases “were a bit up but not too much.”

Sixteen cases have been reported to the unit this year compared with 45 last year. Dr Gee said that in late summer and early autumn there was normally a slight increase in cases over other months. The cause of the most recent cases are unknown as the unit is awaiting test results. The Timaru unit has no plans to follow North

Otago which is testing 40 food outlets for the salmonella strain. The principal health protection officer, Mr Richard Parr, said the unit routinely tested food outlets for a range of problems. A sampling programme for salmonella would be started if it was thought a salmonella outbreak involving food poisoning was under way, he said.
