Li strike-bound

NZPA-Reuter Hong Kong Industrial action by court interpreters has hampered proceedings against former Hong Kong Stock Exchange chairman, Mr Ronald Li, and seven colleagues, all facing corruption charges, according to a prosecutor yesterday.

The magistrate, Mr Peter White, adjourned the case against 58-year-old Li and the other defendants until May 31.

The prosecutor, Mr Anthony Duckett, said plans to go ahead with committal proceedings in a higher court had been delayed because industrial action by court interpreters demanding better pay and working conditions had meant key documents had not been translated. Although proceedings in

Hong Kong’s courts are in English, official interpreters translate into Cantonese and certified copies of documentary evidence in both languages are used. Mr Li and the other defendants face a variety of charges of accepting bribes in the form of preferential allocation of shares in return for approving the listing of a company. Mr Li alone faces three other charges connected with the flotation of Cathay Pacific Airways and the Japanese construction firm Kumagai Gumi (HK). Mr Li, who was arrested in January last year, has so far made five court appearances. The others were arrested during the course of last summer.
