Bob Charles generous

The finances of the New Zealand Golf Foundation received a healthy boost recently with the arrival of a cheque from New Zealand’s most famous golfer, Bob Charles. Charles sent a cheque for almost $B5OO which represented one per cent of his earnings on the United States senior professional circuit. Last

year was the best for Charles on the tour, but he has contributed $18,335.58 since he became eligible for the senior circuit three years ago. The foundation recorded a big increase in the numbers of people introduced to golf and coached last year as compared with 1987,

when it came into existence. From 28,000 people assisted two years ago the total swelled to 69,000.

Regional coaches have been assigned the role of ensuring quality over quantity. Emphasis will be placed on follow-up programmes, such as inter-school team training and competition.
