Change for presidents?
Agricultural and pastoral show committees should be looking at their method of electing a president for one year, said Mr Melville Wells, this year’s president of the Oxford show.
Mr Wells said that a two-year term should be considered. Associations were getting into difficulty as presidents were coming through at a young age. Presidency was a difficult task and the danger was there that many young ones may drop out rather than take on the task.
Mr Wells said that in some associations once a term of presidency was over that person then became a past President for a period and then was lost to the committee. A lot of valuable information and help disappeared. Mr Wells said he appreciated the help of his secretary, Mrs Janice Skurr, who will be helping run her thirteenth show. This continuation of knowledge was important and helpful to presidents organising the show.
He said it was unfor-
tunate that the pastpresident, Mr Dale Weavers, had struck a terrible show day, weather wise, last year after putting in a lot of work to ensure the success of the day.
Mr Wells said it was good to see the association move its attention away from just show day and to other projects throughout the year. A deer velvet competition is held in December and attracts entries from throughout the South Island. It is felt that holding the competition in the evening may make
it more popular because December is an extremely busy time of the year for farmers. A beef killing competition was introduced this year and is expected to be well supported in the future. The competition was judged on the hoof at the Oxford saleyards and the stock was then killed at the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company and judged on the hook. Although entries for the killing competition weere down this year because of drought conditions, it was a success and people attending the open day at C.F.M. found the visit extremely informative. Mr Wells said that he was grateful for the support of sponsors.
